Blake's Health Update 2010/06/19
Blake is feeling a bit better today and tonight.
Last night at midnight he had a fever and again this morning around 4am. The Nurse, who's name I did not get, said his temp was 38.9 C, which is about 102 F. He was supposed to get an x-ray yesterday but I guess there was a mix up or something and he didn't get the x-ray until today. They wanted to ensure that the temperature was not resulting from a different problem in the intestines, such as a hole in the bowel.
Results came back good! There appears to be no hole and no dilation in the bowel. We're thrilled. Dr. Louw and Dr. Fowler are leaning towards the fact that the fever is from the C-Diff. They said a temperature that high would be more likely linked to the C-Diff rather than the Crohn's. They said that there's no realistic timeline as to how quick the meds are going to work to get rid of the infection. He's on Flagyl and Vancomycin to help battle this infection. I will feel better if he is without a temp tonight and tomorrow.
The Remicade has hopefully been ordered and if the infection is better, he will get the miracle medicine on Tuesday. Blake is soooo anxious to get it into his system. We know that the dose in the hospital will not cost us anything; but we pray that the government will authorize the future doses. I am hoping they listen to Dr. Depew this time, since we jumped through all the necessary hoops over the last few months.
Blake's best friend Billy, one of our "adopted sons", along with his girlfriend Julia stopped in tonight. It was good for Blake to spend time with his bud. Billy got us all laughing so hard that Julia and I had to make a trip to the little girls' room. It was nice to see Blake smile from ear to ear. I was doing a bit of smiling myself when they walked in with a Tim Horton's French Vanilla!!!! Ohhhh it went down soooo gooooood! Thanks, Billy-Bob and Julia.
Today we had Nurse Pam and she was simply a delight. Very kind with a good dose of humour. Tonight Nurse Michelle is back on. She asked me if I wanted a cot (I LOVE HER!!!!!). She's gonna go hunt me down one. I hope she hasn't forgotten! In October, the geri-chair worked fine, but yesterday and last night, my lower back and legs are really aching. I did some stretches and some crunches today. Just laying on the hard floor helped my back to feel better. But the legs are aching again now, so hopefully the cot will arrive.
Well, I'm going to sign off. I was up until after 1am this morning, then up again from 4am to 5:30am. I desperately need some shut-eye.
I'll post again tomorrow, seeing as it's Father's Day. Hope you all have some great family time.
What's Your Anthem?
It might be the fact that as you sing your Anthem, you are joined together with millions of other people who, despite differences in religion, politics, or anything else, stand united in support of their home country.
Saturday Night's "Hockey Night In Canada" always brings a tear to my eye before each game. Hearing the Canadian Anthem of "O Canada" just stirs my heart. I join in on the singing, belting out the lyrics from our family's rec room, and it is all I can do to finish the song without choking on that lump in my throat.
O Canada, our home and native land
True patriot love in all thy sons command.....

Then, if we are playing against the United States, I sing along with their Anthem, as I know every word. The melody to their Anthem is absolutely beautiful, and a small part of me wishes it was Canada's Anthem..... but don't tell anyone I said that.
Oh say can you see
By the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hailed
At the twilight's last gleaming....

Since our oldest son, Blake, has been hospitalized this week due to a severe Crohn's Disease flare-up, he and I have taken the opportunity of enjoying some of the soccer games in the 2010 South Africa Fifa World Cup on television. Of course, at the beginning of each game, the two competing teams' Anthems are played.

The camera zooms in on the faces of each of the players, some standing still and concentrating, others mouthing the words, all in support of their country. Some players display the vertical line of tears streaming down their face; and I can't help but think they've got that same lump in their throat.
The camera captures the supporting fans in the stands as they belt out their Anthem as loudly as they can, waving their country's flag, supporting their team, with painted faces and large coloured wigs and hats, huge flags draped around their shoulders.
What is it about a song that makes us stop what we're doing and reflect on it's meaning? And what exactly IS an Anthem anyways?
The Oxford Dictionary describes "anthem" as:
1 an uplifting song associated with a group or cause, especially a patriotic one adopted by a country as an expression of national identity.
2 a musical setting of a religious text to be sung by a choir during a church service.
So it got me to thinking......
What will be our Anthem in Heaven?
Of all the hymns or worship songs you know, which one do you think we will be singing? Which one will join our hearts as one?
I suppose the first song that comes to my mind would be the hymn that many Christians use as their doxology....
Praise God from whom all blessings flow
Praise Him all creatures here below
Praise Him above ye Heavenly hosts
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
But then my mind pondered the word "Holy" and this song came to mind....
Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee.
Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty,
God in three persons, blessed Trinity!
Revelation 4:8 says, Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under his wings. Day and night they never stop saying: "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come."
Our "Anthem" in Heaven will be one of praise to our Lord. Our Anthem, the song that joins our hearts and binds us together as one "country" will be a continual song of praise.... non-stop.... day and night.
If it weren't for the fact that there will be no tears in Heaven, then I would say we would definitely have tears streaming down our face and big ol' lumps in our throat!
We'll be waving our palm-branch flags, and shouting words of praise and adoration, and singing full strength to our Lord.
Our hearts will be united in proclaiming that Our Lord Reigns.
And, rather than standing at attention and facing a flag with a hand over our heart, the difference will be that every knee will be bowed in reverence as we kneel before the Lord our God, our Maker.

Yup..... I feel that lump returning.

Blake's Health Update 2010/06/18
Besides my treat of potato chips once in a while, I am trying to eat "properly" while we're in the hospital because I'm not very active and don't want to come of here feeling like a bloated ol' cow.
But I just couldn't resist those french fries tonight. I was going to have the healthy veggie stir-fry, but the man ahead of me ordered fish 'n chips and it sounded soooo good. I had travelled in the elevator with this man; he's a patient on this floor but from another wing. He said he won't eat the hospital food. haha. It's really not all that bad. I have eaten what Blake doesn't, and it tastes pretty good to me.
Anyways, this gentleman and I chatted up a storm in the elevator and in line in the cafeteria, so I invited him to sit and have supper with me. His name is Bill and it sounds like he's a millionaire. He's 68 and has three homes; one in Gananoque, one in Florida, and one in Alabama. He's selling his Gananoque home for $2.5 million. [gasp!] Said he's got a 39-year-old lady friend who likes to go shopping and spend his money. hahha. He came to hospital on the weekend because he suddenly had no feeling in his leg. Doctors told him to be prepared to lose his leg!!! Can you imagine???
As it turns out, they put him on Heparin and Coumadin and they believe he should be able to keep his leg! And he is up and walking about now like nothing is wrong. Wow! Now before you go criticizing me on inviting a stranger to join me at my table, I was not the least bit worried because he was in his hospital gown and was attached to an I.V. pole. No chance of him attacking me or dragging me off anywhere! haha.
No changes in Blake today. He did apparently have a temperature this morning, but his face and body did not feel even slightly warm. When Dr. Fowler came in later, she indicated that she wants to get an x-ray to ensure that Blake's bowel is not dilating. If it is, that could be a problem. It might mean something like a hole in the bowel, which would mean "going under the knife". I told Blake not to panic or worry about any of that because she is just doing the x-ray because of the temperature. I think if there were other problems, he would be experiencing pain, and he's not. She is just taking precautions with the x-ray, to which I am very thankful.
She said that it appears right now that the Remicade dose will likely be on Tuesday now, rather than Monday. This is not because of the temperature/x-ray situation, but rather because it can sometimes take 24 to 48 hours to get the medicine; so I'm guessing it maybe wasn't ordered until today. But that's OK.... it just gives us one more day to ensure the C-Diff infection is going away.
I know I commented yesterday about Nurse Persnickety, but I will just tell you that all the other nurses certainly make up for her poor attitude. When we came to this room very late Wednesday night (rather, early early Thursday morning!) we were greeted by Nurse Bindu. She looks to me to be from India. She's beautiful and she's so sweet. She was on duty again late last night. Yesterday, we had Nurse Michelle (LOVE her name!... haha) and she was very kind as well. In the early evening last night, and again tonight, we have had Nurse Suzette who is a Philipino lady. She is a sweetheart as well. And for today, we had another male nurse, Nurse Don. He retired but returned to nursing and said that he probably works more hours now than when he was full time. He was delightfully kind and compassionate. He said he worked years ago in North Carolina, and I told him that my husband has been recently travelling down in that direction.
They've just been so good to us here. Doctors too. They pop in every day to see how things are. It's not the same doctor all the time, but they're all familiar with Blake's situation and all seem to be in agreement as to how Blake should be treated.
Blake is tired tonight. He's been sleeping since he had supper. I think he's just sick and tired of being sick and tired. He can't remember the last time he felt good. Here's hoping next week will be a turn-around point for him. Please continue to pray that this C-Diff infection will clear up quickly. Crohn's is enough of a problem to deal with, let alone another bowel infection.
And just before I close this post, I want to say a HUGE THANK YOU to the "mystery person" who rented us a TV for a few days. It was very kind of you. I appreciate watching the soccer games on the TV because the internet has a slight delay. You watch the goalie kick the ball and then the screen freezes.... then it "catches up", but the ball has already moved to the centre of the field. So we greatly appreciate the TV. I have a couple of "ideas" as to who it might be, but my sister has obviously been sworn to secrecy. Again, Mystery Man/Woman..... Thank You so much.
OK, I'm signing off now. I will update on the weekend if there are any changes. God bless.

Blake's Health Update 2010/06/17 - Update 6:10pm
I just had a lovely dish of lemon chicken with peppers and..... and.... some other junk..... I think it was tiny lima beans and those little baby corn-on-the-cob (what ARE those called anyways?)..... served on a bed of rice. It was a little on the spicy side (probably not spicy enough for YOU, Victoria! ha).
I also bought a couple of bags of chips (which really only contain a small handful of chips) and a Gingerale. I bought Blake a yogurt and a hunk of cheese because he is now allowed to eat! While I was having supper, we figured they'd bring him HIS supper, and I just got the yogurt & cheese for him in case he was still hungry. But no tray has shown up. We're gonna wait for the next shift of nurses to come in at 7pm before we ask for anything.
The current nurse is.... well..... I don't really have a suitable adjective for her. She's not really miserable.... she's just very.... persnickety (that's a word, isn't it?) and she's got a "don't-bother-me-I'm-very-busy-running-in-circles-and-don't-have-time-for-sick-people" attitude!
And I just wrote a whole paragraph about an incident today with Blake's Sub-Q site (his Subcutaneous site for injections in his arm), but after I re-read it, I sounded like a complainer and a whiner, so I've deleted it. Maybe she's just having a bad day. We have been fortunate to have some real sweetheart nurses in here, and I shouldn't let one "crotchety" one ruin my mood. I suppose I should be praying for her..... praying I don't wrap my hands around her throat!
Juuuust kiddinggggg! I wouldn't do that.
I'd actually trip her on the way out the door.
Ha! No, I wouldn't. At least not on purpose! [insert evil grin!]
Anyways, Dr. Hookey came in this afternoon to talk to Blake, and Dr. Fowler and Dr. Weymouth (sp?) joined him. The meat and potatoes of what they said is basically he can have some meat and potatoes! haha. He told them he is very hungry and they have agreed to let him have food as long as he's careful and not over-doing it. Originally Dr. Yu (sp?) didn't want Blake having food so he could give his bowels a well-needed rest.
Dr. Hookey said to continue with antibiotics over the weekend for the C-Diff infection, and they will order in a dose of Remicade to be administered on Monday IF everything stays good over the weekend. If things start getting wonky over the weekend, then they want to do a scope and determine from the looks of the bowel whether he is still infected with the C-Diff infection or whether he's just having a Crohn's flare-up.
So we are hoping and praying that we have a good weekend and that the Remicade will be a "GO" for Monday.
Dr. Hookey is a nice gentleman. Apparently he's a Newfie, so my brother-in-law Brent will be glad to hear that! AND Dr. Hookey even knows where Cherry Valley is!!! How cool is THAT!
Oh yah, back to the Sub-Q. Blake told Dr. Hookey that the Sub-Q was really bothering him, even after Nurse Persnickety had replaced it; so he asked if he could just get injections directly into the skin as opposed to the Sub-Q site. The Doctor said No Problem.
Blake has also been receiving 10mg of Morphine every six hours with break-throughs as needed (extra morphine in between regular morphine shots). I believe Blake's file also indicates that if he only needs 5mg, then that's ok. Well, I had gone to supper and when Nurse Persnickety came in to give Blake a dose of pain killer, Blake said she had this puny little amount in a needle. Blake said, "Is that 5mg?" She said, "Oh no! That'd be ten times more than you're allowed to have! This is ZERO POINT FIVE mg!" Blake tried to tell her what he's been getting, and then he figured he'd just wait until our night nurse, Bindu, comes on at 7pm. Bindu was on last night when we were brought up here from Emerg and she was extremely kind.
Anyways, when I had got back from my supper and Blake told me this "0.5mg" story, I looked up and down the halls for her but couldn't find her, and I haven't seen her in the last two hours. I frankly think that she likely didn't take her happy pill before she left home this morning. Honestly! If there's a question as to the medication, then call the flippin' doctor and get it straightened out! [sigh]
Sorry. I had to vent for a second. I think Blake is rather cheesed as well, and so he should be. It's not the error that I'm necessarily ticked at. It's the fact that she's been short with Blake all day. If you can't have patience with patients, then get the heck out of this job. Sick people need some kind and compassionate attention. They're not here by choice, for goodness sake.
He did get a tray of food brought in, but he didn't care for everything on the tray. He picked away at the meat and potatoes and ate a few peas and some bread, but that was it. Oh well, he shouldn't be overloading anyways.
So I think that brings you all up to our current happenings here in Metropolitan Kingston. I am thrilled that Mexico won today's soccer game against France. I am NOT thrilled that the tv technicians caught onto the fact that our tv was working and then shut it off! So much for free tv! We can watch some shows on the computer though. Likely we'll hit the hay early tonight; so it all works out in the wash.
Have a wonderful evening, everyone. (Hope you're winning your baseball game, Jared! Thanks for driving him, Jake! Enjoy the game, Jon!)
Blake's Health Update 2010/06/17
First of all..... Thursday???? ALREADY??????
And secondly, June 17th????? You're KIDDING me???
Where did the first two weeks of June go?
Blake has been moved to a room. We're not on the proper floor nor the proper wing, as they are obviously running short on beds. But we're THRILLED to have a private room! AND our tv is working! AND I have a geri-chair, so I can actually lay down (somewhat) and sleep.
We are, at this moment, (2:28pm), waiting for the FIFA CUP Soccer game to begin. This afternoon's game is France vs. Mexico. I decided I would go for Mexico because I met some very nice Mexicans when I was at Dane & Valerie's house in California in 2005. Blake said he's going for Mexico too because he "doesn't like the French". haha
If I can't decide which team to go for in sports, I decide which team has the nicer jersey. The Mexican team have a bright green uniform that looks like the same colour of green that is in the Brazillian's yellow & green uniform.... so we have to keep things matching, right?
Overall, since Canada is not competing (which really annoys me!), then we will root for Brazil. (Sorry Sophie.... But we promise that Greece will be our second choice, just for YOU!) (Oh yes, and USA is competing too......)
OK, Greece, USA, & Brazil will be our top three teams with Brazil placing first. Oh, I'm assuming there's an African team..... I should be supporting them for my sister, Wannett's, sake.
Can we just ALL be friends???? haha. Alrighty then, that's enough of soccer. Those of you not following it will be bored completely by now.
So, as I said, we're in a room and are quite comfortable. Nothing has changed as far as diagnosis and treatment. Still getting a med to treat the infection of C-Diff; getting Heparin because he's been in bed for two weeks.... Heparin will prevent blood clots; still getting morphine; not as much nausea meds; still 30mg of Prednisone. Thankfully they haven't increased the Prednisone because it has to be weaned down at SUCH a slow rate.
They are not allowing Blake to eat anything. Nor drink anything other than sips of water. Dr. Yu (sp?) wants his bowels to just have a rest. Of course Blake is dying to eat. He's hungry, but is getting nourishment through the I.V., so don't think he's fading away in here. I'm not eating in front of him anymore, but he'll look at me with those sad puppy-dog eyes just begging for a bite. Tuesday night he took two bites of my salmon sandwich and he savoured every chew. And he doesn't even like salmon! I cheated yesterday and gave him a couple of potato chips and told him to let them melt in his mouth and then chew chew chew!!!! Then he had one bite of a granola bar.
This morning he lay here looking out into space and very matter-of-factly said, "When I get outta here, I am going to eat and eat and eat. And I want Chinese Food on the way home!" haha.
Dr. Weymouth (sp?) was in here this morning and said she'll be sending the dietician to talk to Blake, but it didn't mean that he would be allowed to eat yet. I, myself, could kill for a bag of crunchy chips right now, but there's no way I'll eat them in front of him. I'll sneak out in a while and have some where he can't see me. hahahahahahaaaaa
Sorry to the girls in The County who wanted a picture of the attractive Man Nurse in the E.R. I COULD walk down into Emerg with my camera and find him, but Security might wonder what I'm doing. My son is hospitalized, and I'm being dragged down to the police station in a paddy-wagon to explain why I photographing a nurse in KGH's Emerg!
"But REALLY, Officer, it's not for ME but my girlfriends in The County!"
Yah.
NOT gonna go over well.
Our Man Nurse reminds me of one of Jared's hockey coaches a bit. So, ladies, get your kids involved in The Prince Edward Kings and you'll have a good LIVE picture of my Man Nurse. (hahaha... I just said "MY Man Nurse".... tee-hee.... I meant "Blake's". [snicker]).
Sorry, I know I'm not being well organized in this post.... watching the soccer game and blogging at the same time.... I'm all over the map [ba-dump-bump.... get it? All over the map? World Soccer? hahaha.... bad joke]
Anyways, Dr. Weymouth said they'll have to do more testing of Blake's stools next week to determine if the C-Diff infection is under control. The problem here is that a Crohn's flare-up produces diahrea. C-Diff infection also produces diahrea. Can't treat the Crohn's with Remicade until the infection is cleared up. So the problem lies in determining whether the diahrea is from the Crohn's or the C-Diff. Tests next week should show whether the infection has settled. Meanwhile, Blake remains on antibiotics until Monday. Then we hopefully will know more.
By the way, the Gmail does not seem to work properly on Blake's computer. He said he was having problems with it in New Brunswick as well, so I will only check my emails occasionally while in hospital. If there's an urgent message, try using my Message Box via Facebook. It will be much easier. Always feel free to drop a line or two on my Facebook Wall or Blake's Facebook Wall. The comments are encouraging for him and he so much appreciates everyone's prayers.
Blake is serving the Lord even from his hospital bed in the Emerg. Last night an older woman across from us was very distressed. She'd been fine the night before and all of Wednesday; however, last night she became very aggitated. She felt the nurses were lying to her and trying to trick her. She kept asking for the doctor.
She later became very aggitated and walked out of her cubicle. The problem was that she was hooked up to an I.V. and oxygen. Her I.V. ripped out, and blood was dripping all over the place. The nurse tried to apply pressure to her arm to stop the bleeding and the woman was trying to run from her to find a doctor. Her cubicle was directly across from Blake's, and Blake could see when she was trying to escape again.
Blake would talk to her and tell her to just sit down and just try to calm down. She kept saying that she couldn't trust them, and that they were tricking her. She tried to tell Blake that they would be taking us all away. Then she spoke of refrigerators and big trucks. Blake wondered if she was referring to a cold ambulance.
When she saw the cleaning staff come in to clean one of the cubicles, she got very anxious again. At one point I had to enter her cubicle because the nurses had gone to help others and I was afraid she was going to rip out the I.V. again. Also, because I was gowned up, I think she thought I was a nurse; so I just let Blake continue talking to her.
Blake called for a nurse once, and the nurse said, "Why don't you just continue encouraging her to sit down.... she seems to be responding to you!" So Blake calmly kept encouraging her that everything was OK; that the nurses were there to help her; and that the doctors would be in to see her in the morning. She felt they were getting paid more money to "take us away".
Nurse Janice told us that they had a room ready for us, and when we were moved from the Emerg to a room last night, my fear was that when this lady opened her curtain and found that we were not there, she was probably afraid that "the bad guys had come and taken us away by truck to the refrigerators!" I hope that she had a restful night and was reassured by nurses that we, in fact, had not been hauled away in a cold truck!
But I was proud of Blake for speaking calmly with her and telling her that all would be OK. He kept telling her that the nurses weren't here to harm her, but that they were a blessing to us and were here to help. If Blake didn't go into the Ministry, I think he should be in health care. He has a caring nature about him.
Anyways, I seem to be very long-winded today. Probably because I had a nap at lunch time and have got my "second wind". I'm gonna go and watch the rest of the game with Blake. We had to shut the door because I was starting to get my hockey voice and I didn't want the nurse coming in and telling me to be quiet. hahaha. (Thinking of your Facebook video, Chris P., but I'm not quite that wild!)
Not expecting many changes in Blake's treatment over the next few days, but I'll try and keep up with some posts (likely shorter! haha) just to keep in touch.
Enjoy your FIFA, everyone! (Mexico is ahead 1-0 with mere minutes left in the game! Do I know how to pick 'em or what?)
(Rats! They just shut our tv off with MINUTES left in the game!!!!! At least we can watch it online!)

Blake's Health Update 2010/06/16
Blake also has an infection called C-Diff. It's something you can get from being in the hospital, and it causes diahrea. Dr. Fowler just came in, she works with Dr. Depew, and she said they will give him some antibiotics to help get rid of this 'bug'. She said they will still be giving him Remicade, but it will be a couple of days on the antibiotics before they treat with Remicade for the simple fact that Remicade lowers your immune system. They will also be giving him Heparin, which will help to keep blood clots from forming because he is not up and walking about. Because of the C-Diff, I now have to gown up and glove up, and Blake is not allowed to leave his cubicle. He gets his own private potty now! :o)
So things are still moving along to the point where we will be getting the Remicade... it's just moving at a tiny bit slower pace.
Upward and onward!!!!!!!

Original Post -
A nice hot cup of Red Rose tea and two pieces of brown toast smothered in strawberrry jam...... Mmmmmmmm.

That was MY breakfast! Of course it wasn't on this very pretty dish set; but it still tasted great.
Last night Nurse Marg showed me where to make tea and get some snacks if I was hungry. So this morning I have taken advantage of that. I didn't eat anything yesterday other than a couple of bananas, a couple of granola bars, and some soda biscuits. I didn't realize I hadn't eaten an actual meal until we were already here in Kingston Emerg. Then it was too late to order in Chinese Food. [grin]
As we were coming into Kingston on the 401 in the ambulance, the traffic started getting backed up long before our Sir John A. MacDonald exit, so Chris (the ambulance driver) turned off on Sydenham, thinking it would be quicker. Well, traffic was absolutely nuts, being late afternoon, so we basically crept along Sydenham Road to Princess Street. At the intersection, there's a Tim Horton's and I joked with Chris about running in to get us all a Timmie's coffee and a snack because we certainly had time with all the traffic! (I could kill for a French Vanilla right about now!)
Then I questioned him about what they do if they stop somewhere to order a meal and then get an emergency call. He just grinned and said that they have to leave their order. He said they usually try to carry some snacks in the ambulance with them because there are some days they don't get lunch until around 4pm. Not a good thing, I suppose, if you're someone who has trouble with blood sugar levels. I'm sure they appreciate these places that are open 24 hours!
Well, I guess you'd like an update on our boy.
Blake had a restful night here in the Emergency Department. We have not got a room yet and have no idea when we'll get one. They must be awfully honkin' busy up there. He just left for a CT Scan. In last night's post I indicated he'd gone for a CT Scan; however, it ended up being just a regular abdominal X-ray, not a CT Scan. They just want to make sure there are no obstructions in the bowel, etc.
He is still taking Morphine for pain and still on Zofran (Ondansetron) for nausea. They are also giving him Stemetil (Prochlorperazine) for nausea. Not sure why they're giving him two nausea meds. Nurse Marg double checked this last night, and yes, the doctor wanted him to have both. I don't think they're giving them both at the same time; but rather giving one of them and then a few hours later giving him the other.
Last night Nurse Marg brought me a bed so I could sleep in here next to Blake rather than be propped up in a chair all night. I was very grateful. The bed, laden with not one but THREE flannel sheets, was absolutely heavenly. Nurse Marg said, "I will have to get you up at 6:45am because shift change is at 7am and I don't want to upset the next shift." I said, "That's not a problem at all; I appreciate your kindness." She then took me to a kitchenette to show me where to make a cup of tea and some toast and where to get a sandwich.
This morning at 7am, she had not yet come to wake me up. Blake called my name and said he needed help getting to the bathroom. Off we went. There was a knock on the door....... "Mrs. Found? Just letting you know I've just taken your bed away, OK?" (It was Nurse Marg). "OK!", I hollered, "Thank you for your kindness!"
When we returned to our cubicle we were visited by our next nurse, Derek, a handsome gentleman. He was extremely kind as well and said, "I didn't mind if that bed stayed here. You could have slept all day!" OK, I immediately like Nurse Derek. I laughed and jokingly ordered, "Well then, bring the bed back in!" He grinned, looking around for my bed that had already been taken away......
He's been very kind to us in here and has a great personality. There's nothing that helps in these situations more than a great bedside manner, and we have definitely been blessed by having Nurse Marg and Nurse Derek.
Here's the ironic thing..... When we were up on Connell 9 Wing last October, there was one afternoon or early evening that a whole team of young pretty nursing students were assigned to the floor to assist any patients that needed help. Well, we were in a room where the other gentlemen were all over 70. Who's bed do you think the young ladies attended???? Yup. They were all giggling and tee-hee-ing at the foot of Blake's bed. To me, they looked more like they were fourteen-year-old girls. They were very cute and we ended up "receiving assistance" from Samantha. (The poor girl.... all she wanted to do was to help Blake, but at that point, Blake was feeling better and didn't need a thing).
Well Blake was telling his girlfriend, Anelyse, about all this. Anelyse lives in Brazil and they talked everyday through the computer on Skype. Blake was teasing her about all the pretty young nurses that were coming in to help him.
Last night, Blake was once again talking to Anelyse on the computer and made reference to looking forward to getting assistance from "the pretty young nurses". And HERE is the ironic part. Last night's shift was covered by Nurse Marg, an OLDER lady, likely in her late 50's, early 60's. Today's shift is covered by Nurse Derek, a DUDE, as Blake says. HAHAAHAHAHAAHAHAAAAAAA. I think it's hilarious. Blake is expecting a sweet young thing and he gets a lady who could be his grandma and he gets a dude. hahaahahahaahahahahaahahhaaaaaaaa
I think it's funny.
So will Anelyse when I tell her.
Blake... well.... he doesn't find the humour in it.
HAHAAHAHAHAAHAHAAAAA....... Life's funny, eh?
And I'll DEFINITELY let you know details about our night nurse! HAHAHAHAHAAHAAAAA.
I can't stop grinning about it. ;o)

Blake's Health Update 2010/06/15 (7:25pm)
WE ARE HERE!!!!!
Nurse Cheryl, one of Blake's & my favourite nurses, came in our room in Picton to say that Dr. Depew had requested Blake be transferred to Kingston Emergency and wait for a bed there. Cheryl said the ambulance would be coming to transfer us. I figured we'd have a bit of a wait ahead of us, but nay-nay.... the ambulance was jiffy-quick! Apparently they were having a quiet day.
I joined Chris in the front, as he drove the "bus", and Blake bunkered down in the back of the ambulance on the stretcher, all jacked-up on morphine. Todd carefully watched over him, periodically taking his vitals, and it sounded like they chatted up a storm back there.
I had put my car keys under the mat in the car at Picton Hospital's parking lot and had locked the car up safe and sound. I figured Jake could give Jon a ride into town and get the car so Jon has something to drive over the next couple of days. We have one of those keyless entry pads with the numbers over the door handle, so I figured I'd just quote the number to Jake or Jon over the phone so they could gain access to the car.

Guess what?
I forgot the number.
Normally I instinctively press the five digits without paying attention to what the numbers are. But when I had to THINK of the sequence, my mind went blank. All I could think of was the last four numbers of Jake's cell phone and I knew that wasn't even close to the correct number.
Just as we walked in the door of the Emergency Department here in Kingston, my cell phone rang. Jake needed the number as they were at the car and ready to take it home. I gave him a five digit number.
It was wrong.
I gave him another number.
It was still wrong.
I told him he'd have to give me a minute to think about it. I ended up walking over to the entrance door, afraid that I was going to get yelled at for having my phone on in the Emerg. Dept.
So I called Jake back and said, "OK, give this number a try."
He did.
It worked.
Whew!
Brain freeze.
OK, back to Blake.... since "it's alllll about Blaaaake!!!!!" [grin] (family humour)
He is resting very comfortably, now that there's some morphine in his body. The pain killer is certainly effective, and he's not experiencing that severe abdominal pain.
The porter just came in to take him for a CT Scan, to make sure there's nothing wonky going on in the intestine (blockages, etc.), but the doc is pretty sure that the results will come back with no surprises.
The clerk just came in to discuss coverages as far as private, semi-private, or ward; so I am just assuming things are rolling on a bed! Wonder if he'll end up with another roommate named "Ron"???? haha. Wouldn't that be hilarious?
Well not hilarious, but ..... funny.
Well not funny, but ..... strange.......
You know what I'm sayin'.
[Shut up, Michelle]
[ok]
I will update again when I can. Sometimes it's hard to get the computer away from Blake, yet he tells ME that "I" am the one that's addicted. He says, "You don't have to give everyone an update right away!"
Ummmm, yes, Blake, I do!
..... because "it's allllll about Blaaaaake!!!!" ....... [wink, wink]
Battery's getting low on computer. Will update again soon.
(Hoping Brazil won the soccer game! I'll check the score once I get more juice in the computer!)
